Welcome to The Point, EDO’s guest series where we’ll talk with people who represent the future of the TV advertising industry about what’s happening in the industry today and where it’s headed.

From their insights and experiences to advice for others looking to jump into the field, there’s a lot to cover – so let’s get right to the point!

Today we’re chatting with Cecilia Solorzano, Sr Manager, Strategy & Insights – Automotive at Univision Communications, Inc. Welcome, Cecilia!

What’s the most exciting part of your work/role?
My main reason why I love working in this industry, especially at Univision, has been because of the company’s mission statement – we want to inform, entertain, and empower the U.S. Hispanic community. And at the same time, we want to be able to provide knowledgeable information on the U.S. Hispanic consumer to our clients.

What do you see for the future of the industry? What is going to be an important trend or conversation?
In the past year there has been a surge in On-Demand streaming services, and Univision has recently joined this space. It was just announced at the end of March, PrendeTV, our very own free, premium, ad-supported streaming platform that will be available to all U.S. viewers, offering an extensive selection of streaming channels and video on-demand content from Univision’s most popular Spanish-language programs. So, this is positively a hot topic which has come up in majority of recent client meetings and I project this will continue to be a popular topic in the future.

What advice do you have for someone looking to work in this industry?
Don’t ever be afraid to not “just go for it,” believe in yourself because you can do anything. If a job posting in this industry makes you feel like you might not be able to, snap yourself out of it and send your resume in, because most likely you are qualified. Also, do not be afraid to ask questions, asking questions before starting any project reduces compilation time.

What qualities will help someone succeed in this industry or in a role like yours?
I believe some great qualities to be able to succeed in this industry are some very common everyday qualities to have. Being able to listen, not being afraid to ask questions or to raise your hand to a new project. Show eagerness to help you grow in your role. Come up with innovative ideas that can help in your role. And lastly, you must be great at multi-tasking because it’s a very rapid industry.

Is there a particular mentor, source, or author that has been an influence on you?
My boss, she has been there to guide not only me but her whole team step-by-step since our day one in the industry. From the very beginning, I felt very comfortable working in this industry because of her. She has helped us all grow in our own roles and along the way has also grown in her role, and I admire her a lot because of that. I am sure my teammates would agree, with her guidance and compassion we have managed to grow in this industry that is always changing.

Last question – is there a motto you live by?
“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist” – Pablo Picasso. Especially in this industry, we go through trainings, learnings, internal and external meetings, everything to acquire the knowledge of the industry, yet we must continually be innovating and willing to try new things because this industry is ever-changing and very competitive. But with that said, we should also be ready to innovate and create from within. I believe, putting your personal touch in your work pays off greatly.

Thanks so much for sharing your insights on the industry and your advice for others looking to work in this space, Cecilia!

Before you go…

Favorite season?
Tough one because it’s a split between Spring and Autumn. I guess it’s mostly because I like that very subtle warm breeze that both Spring and Autumn have.

Favorite holiday?
Thanksgiving, not just because of the delicious food but the warmth of bringing the family together to celebrate our blessings and it’s the beginning of the holiday season.

Top 3 Musical Artists?
Ah this one is a hard one! I love music so much, I was even named after a song, but if I must pick my favorite 3, they are: Elvis Presley, Silvestre Dangond and Sublime.

Favorite TV show?
I am a huge reality junkie! I either have watched most reality shows or on my list to watch soon. But if I had to pick my favorite reality show it’s 90 Day Fiancé.

What’s something you love to nerd out about?
Astronomy and a dab of Astrology. I even have an app on a guide of the sky which I open when I want to show my friends, I know my constellations. Astrology on the other hand, I love to be able to discuss with my friends on why certain things happen to us depending on our birth charts and how the placement of planets at time of birth determine the unique aspects of our personality.

Coffee or Tea?
Depends on the time of day. I like to start with my extra hot cup of coffee in the morning and then switch to tea throughout the day till nighttime.

Thanks for joining us, Cecilia. We wish you all the best!
